Breast-Feeding Controversy

There's no question that breast feeding is one of the healthiest things you can do for your baby. Not to mention, the law in New York State says women have the right to breast feed in public.

But there are lots of people who get very uncomfortable about it.

It seems that's what started the whole thing at this café.

The mother says she was booted out for feeding her baby girl, but the cafe says that's not how it all went down.

They say they just asked her to cover up and never told her to leave.

After you hear both sides, we want to know where you stand.

Who do you think is right: The café or the mother? And what do you think about breast feeding in public?

It's a tricky thing for lots of moms, especially the ones who work full time! I have two young kids and I nursed both of them -- but I never did it in public. I just never felt comfortable. I would pump instead. I could even pump and drive at the same time on my way to work! How's that for multitasking?

And most of my friends did or do the same thing. But there are lots of women who feel differently about it. What do you think?

  • I have seen women breast feed in public (subway), they just put a towel over  themselves.  If they don't bring attention to themselves, no one would ever notice.

  • It is amazing to see how society is torn on the topic of breastfeeding.  While some people are talking about knowing the owner of Lily O'briens, I know the breastfeeding mothers.  What I can tell you is that Julia is a very discreet person.  What I can also tell you is that this incident took place at 11:130am and the store was not filled with male patrons as the owner said.  There was one male patron walking out of the general manager's office. It is interesting how the general manager, Marisa Davis did not go on camera to tell her story.  For those of you saying that Lilyh O'Briens is an upstanding business that is sensitive and caring, why wasn't this behavior displayed in front of the four year old who witnessed Marisa's out of control behavior?  The four year old who was not allowed to use the restroom because her mother and friend and the two infants were thrown out of the establishment.  I can go on and on about what happened that day, but bottom line is that Lily O'Briens broke the law.  I will be at the nurse in and I sincerely hope that this issue goes global so that ignorant people are taught a lesson.  Learn and respect the law!

  • I am very close with the owner and manager of Lily O'Briens and know that they would NEVER mean to offend a breast feeding mother.  It was clearly a miscommunication caused by other customers' discomfort with the situation.  Lily O'Briens is an upstanding business that is sensitive and caring when it comes to their customers.  Hopefully this whole thing blows over.

  • I think choosing to breast feed is the best gift from a mother to a baby, but it should remain between the mother and baby---not displayed in public.    The mother should be able to breast feed any place she chooses, using a shawl for privacy.     Some mothers are so proud of themselves that they intentionally display their breasts, but knowing that even one person might be disturbed by the visual....just carry a shawl in your diaper bag, and keep your pride to yourself.
